Volunteering to help with Girlguiding Cheshire Border
Over 450 adults currently volunteer within our County, giving their time to help devise and organize interesting and challenging programmes for the girls in their units. In return they acquire skills, have fun and gain a tremendous sense of achievement from the contribution they are making to their local community and to the lives of the girls and young women involved.
Perhaps you were a Brownie or a Guide yourself and would like to find out more about guiding as an adult? Or perhaps you’ve never been involved but are looking for a worthwhile hobby to balance your life. Adult leaders in guiding comment positively about their experiences:
- ‘Guiding has equipped me with the skills to develop both personally and professionally.’
- ‘I drive home feeling absolutely over the moon and confident I’ve achieved something great!’
- ‘You get to meet lots of new people, have a go at organising and leading, and learn lots of new things.’
Becoming a Leader of a guiding unit is a regular commitment but enormous fun and incredibly rewarding.
Becoming a leader is best done as a member of a leadership team, where responsibilities and workload are shared. Unit Leaders are given training both ‘on the job’ and through training sessions. Initially they gain the Girlguiding UK Leadership Qualification and there are further training opportunities available once qualified.
When and how often units meet depend upon the commitments of participants involved. For example, some may meet once a week in the evenings, others may meet once a fortnight on Saturdays.
