County Presentation Evening, April 2008

Girlguiding Cheshire Border held a presentation evening on 29th April 2008 at New Life Church, Congleton. Together with parents, friends and leaders, the mayors of Congleton Borough Council, Congleton Town Council, Macclesfield Borough Council, Nantwich Town Council, Bollington Town Council and Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council watched the proceedings and enthusiastically applauded the various awards made.

Long service awards for 10, 20 and 30 years service were given to leaders from across the county – a great testimony to the dedication and commitment of each of individuals. Particularly when you consider how many girls have been involved in their Rainbow, Brownie, Guide or Senior Section units over the years, how many opportunities they have created and how much fun and laughter they have enjoyed.

Young women who had completed a course of training as young leaders received their awards, including Heather Procter from 6th Congleton Guides and Laura Thomas from 1st Buglawton Guides. Amy Longhurst from Alsager received the Chief Guide’s Challenge Award for achievements across all areas of the senior section programme.

The audience heard from Gemma and Rebecca who were fortunate to be part of the county group at the World Scout Jamboree last year and from Steph Norwood and Jess Shore, from Haslington on everything involved in taking part in the 2008 Cheshire Hike which took place in early April. For them, the challenge included walking 40miles in 2 days carrying 25lb rucksacks and camping overnight in the snow when the temperature dropped to -9C. They were re-presented with the Senior Plus trophy and Eleanor Strutt and Alice Jackson from Macclesfield with the Senior trophy.

The final part of the evening saw the presentation of Duke of Edinburgh Awards gained in recent months but representing commitment over an extended period. Thirteen Bronze Awards were given, together with five Silver Awards, including those to Anna Wainwright, Katie Andow and Kate Wannop of Congleton West Rangers. Anna described her experiences, which included taking a full part in a young farmers’ drama production, becoming a member of a netball team, which achieved third place in a local league, being a young leader with a local brownie unit, which she is still continuing, and a three day expedition in the Peak District with three others, carrying all their equipment. She commented “Some of it was hard work, and a lot was good fun and when I was presented with the award I felt really proud of my achievement”.

The County was especially delighted to present a wonderful three Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards – to Lucy Broadhurst of Macclesfield, Harriet Shore from Haslington and Nichola Adams from Elworth. All these girls have benefitted from the training and support of their leaders and the commitment of the county’s Duke of Edinburgh award advisers. The region adviser, Chris Ring, who was another guest at the evening, praised the county, its dedicated advisers and the young women on their achievements. All the guests spent time after the presentations chatting to the award recipients and learning more about their involvement in guiding generally.
