3rd Congleton Brownies

after much debate chose WWF and have done at least two topics in each section with better understanding of how important it is to reduce our carbon footprint. They have nearly finished.

The girls at 1st Wheelock Brownies

decided to support Sandbach based “Railway Children” as it is so local to them. As well as taking part in the Power of Dreams challenge, the Brownies held a Coffee Morning for family and friends, raising £140. The unit is going to continue supporting this charity.

A representative from the charity came along to the unit meeting to receive the cheque and thank the girls.

1st Congleton Rainbows (update on Water Aid)

The sponsorship money kept coming in, with more added to it after the Rainbows attended a church service with a water theme at Congleton URC. We explained all about Changing the World and our concert, singing a couple of the songs as well. Members of the congregation were impressed with our efforts to help people in Nepal and gave generous donations. We finally sent £365 to Water Aid and so had taken 24 people out of water poverty.

2ndCongleton West Rainbows

completed the woodland trust change the world badge.

We enjoyed Biddulph Country Park, looking at all the trees and hugging one!

We had a sleepover at Astbury Village Hall with Winnie The Pooh and 100 Acre wood theme. We had a guide and explored the old yew tree in the church yard and took measurements which we were going to be sent to David Bellamy so he could date the tree.

3rd Congleton Guides

took part in the Water Aid raising £20. The Guides have enjoyed the singing and acting out the songs.

5th Nantwich Brownies

took part in the Hands up project and Kidscape project.
Half the girls chose to learn the promise in sign, made our unit Deaf friendly with a Whos Who board, found out about what it's like to be deaf using ear plugs, learnt to Lip read and performed a whole song in sign to the parents.
The other half talked about bullying, made treasure chest full of things which are special about them, made friendship bracelets and shared them with the other Brownies, made cakes for others, painted portaits of people who are special to them.
We managed to raise £330 to share between the two charities.
All the girls throughly enjoyed all the activities and wear their badges with pride. Those who learnt Sign are still using it now and looking to do their Disability awareness Badge!

1st Astbury Brownies -

20 girls have been involved with the Railway children project and have made wish pillows and carried out a number of the activities from the pack. Reps from the project visited the unit to talk about the work and the girls made a shelter out of sticks, paper and a black bag. The girls were given badges, pens and information about the project. At the last Brownie meeting in July we invited the girls' families to join us in a end of term fundraiser - cake stall, tombola, raffle. The unit raised £60 which will be going to the Railway Children charity.

Sandbach Trefoil Guild

20 members are supporting Water Aid and the Hospices.

2nd Shavington Brownies

To finish off the activities we have been doing for our changing the world project - help the hospices, the Brownies decided to hold a coffee and cake evening.

The 2nd Congleton Guides

held a coffee evening at Mossley Village Hall at the beginning of July as a finale to the year-long project.
The girls in the unit decided to choose three charities: The Mental Health Foundation - this included designing friendship jewellery which was on display, Plan - they needed no encouragement to take photographs on the theme of “Because I am a Girl” and these were displayed on two laptop computers during the evening. Girlguiding Branch Associations - the coffee evening took on a Caribbean theme with steel band music playing in the background.

4th Alderley Brownies Book Aid fundraiser - UBUNTU

READ about their activities over the last 6 months.

Girlguiding Goostrey - Jodrell District, Capesthorne

have now completed the Ubuntu project by holding our Reading Tent and hamper raffle at Goostrey Rose Day. All the Rainbows and Brownies donated items to fill a large wickerwork hamper which was raffled on the day, the guides made masks to decorate the tent and the senior section put up the tent and helped the Trefoil Guild to man it, and sell raffle tickets. We made £200.00 which is going to Book Aid International

1st Mobberley Brownies

created a Change the World themed float in aid of Save the Children at the Mobberley Rose Queen Festival on Saturday 6th June, 2009. The girls dressed in outfits representing countries from around the world, such as traditional Indian dress through to cheerleaders and the Statue of Liberty! We also had some dressed as Brownies, including 1930s and Japanese Brownies.

mobbrownies3300.JPG

The girls made decorations for the float including flags and hands, and also created a world and painted pictures of people and animals from the countries. (With a little help from one mum who is very good at art!)

mobbrownies2300.JPG

The floats were all judged by the committee and members of the public and I am delighted to say that our float won 1st prize of Best Decorated Float, this included a cup, certificate and £100!!
After the procession there was a Fancy Dress competition that all could enter - and 1st & 2nd prize was won by our Brownies, so a very successful day!

Lower Withington Brownies

have been working hard on friendship. They have received a fab pack from the Mental Health Foundation. They will be holding a friendship party in July to complete their Friendship Challenge as part of Changing the World - look out for a report and pictures soon.

Congleton West Rangers

chose Camfed as their second Changing the World project. Over several meetings different members of the unit introduced us to various aspects of Camfed's work and the vital importance of giving girls in Africa the life-changing chance of four years of secondary education supported by Camfed and the difference that could make to their lives. To raise money and awareness the unit decided to hold a quiz night for other Senior Section members across the county and parents and friends.
Nearly 70 people gathered in Congleton one Friday evening and competed in 9 rounds of the Quiz. All the questions and images were researched and delivered by unit members, who also prepared a buffet meal and collected raffle prizes. Thanks to their efforts and the generosity of everyone present we raised £213 - almost enough to educate a girl for 3 years in one African country. Everyone present found out a lot more about Camfed's work and about Africa and had a great evening together. Well done to Alderley Edge Senior Section who were the winners and to everyone who took part.

1st Congleton Central Rainbows

chose Water Aid to support. The girls liked the songs but the first one was so fast on the CD with the girls finding it difficult to fit in the words that the leaders thought a concert for family and friends would be in December not May as planned! Fortunately actions helped and other songs were easier to learn, although we did miss one out.

Our concert took place on Monday 18 May to a very full hall. The Rainbows pulled out all the stops and everyone remembered the words (well most of them) and the actions. We had a raffle with water related prizes and did the Water Aid Quiz. So far we have raised £120, but there is more sponsorship money to come in.

RainbowsWaterAidMay09250.jpg

The Rainbows thoroughly enjoyed the concert and have learnt about the importance of clean water, sanitation and hygiene both in their lives and for the people of Nepal.

Ruth Hallatt (Age 15) (Senior Section member Central & Sutton District)

has produced two collages supporting Camfed and depicting injustices to women.

collage1260.JPG

Women from different nationalities surround the world, holding hands, symbolising the strength of friendship that can overpower the discrimination surrounding them in black and white.

collage2260.JPG

The orange banner on either side shows the impacts education can have by: revitalising their lives, bringing colour, and equality; by helping people see women as equals.

1st Poynton Brownies

are supporting East Cheshire Hospice. We have had a talk from a volunteer at the hospice telling us of their work there. We have been singing to patients in the day care unit. We are planting summer plants in their tubs. Taking part in their summer fayre. Growing sunflower seeds and raising money to see which Brownie grows the tallest. Sold key rings, and are selling badges for the hospice. Making crafts to sell at the summer fayre. Some Brownies have been car washing. On the whole we arehaving a good time.

Macclesfield Trefoil Guild

26 members have taken part in 3 projects: Crisis involved all members knitting either socks or blanket squares for the homeless ."smelly socks were decorated and sold at County Trefoil Day .
Book Aid. A Reading Gazebo within the meeting place was an apt setting for members to share short excerpts from their favourite books. A monthly ‘lending’ library has been set up for the year whereby books can be read and exchanged for a small donation to Book Aid.
Water Aid. All members took part in ‘Sing for your supper’ This was an evening of singing while celebrating Macclesfield Trefoil Guild 40th Birthday. Donations were given to Water Aid.

Jodrell Trefoil Guild

have had a collection of items to help the Barnados project - and sent them to a local Barnardo's shop to be sold.

Girlguiding Goostrey

are planning a Reading Tent to be held at Goostrey Rose Day on June 27th in aid of Ubuntu - Book Aid.

5th Alsager Brownies

chose to support Book Aid International. The Brownies learnt how across sub Saharan Africa, books are in incredibly short supply – a book can cost a month’s wages and most people don’t have a book to call their own. It costs just £1.25 to send a book to Africa which will be read and cherished by many people for years to come.

As part of the project, the Brownies made African masks, held a book swop, heard stories from Africa and tasted African snacks.

5THALSAGERBROWNIES.JPG

The final event was a book and refreshment sale at the Guide Hall Cedar Avenue. this event raised the fantastic amount of £100.00 for Book Aid.

Upton Priory Brownies

For our first changing the world project the Brownies chose the Island Café project which involved raising money to support guiding in the branch associations. We learnt something about life in these Pacific islands, had a go at making a volcano and tried out lots of cocktail recipes before planning our own Island Café evening in January. We designed invitations and menus, then invited parents and friends to come along and sample our cocktails, exotic cakes and fruit kebabs. The Brownies danced to Caribbean music. The evening ended with one Brownie and a Young leader making their promise. We raised £84 and the Brownies gained their hostess badge.

2nd Handforth (St. Mary's) Brownies

held their Water Aid Evening last week and raised £58.20. Our meeting place was decorated with a 'river' of watery words, posters on how to save water and information about Nepal and the work of Water Aid. In addition to singing the songs for parents and friends they manned water themed games such as: How many fishy sweets in the jar? How much water can you transfer using a straw in 1 minute?, Picture quiz of watery items taken at close quarters, Fishing game, Name the duck and the Water Aid Quiz. All the prizes were bottles of bubbles!
In previous weeks the Brownies enjoyed most of the activities in the pack especially getting blue hands from catching the ball with 'blue' germs on it from a friend.

crisis1300.jpg

We did various activities such as snakes and ladders with a homeless slant, a collage of what they thought a homeless person would look like. They decorated a sock and turned this into a puppet show. We tried writing with our feet and had a feely feet competition.
The girls were allowed to come into the Hostel for free but the parents had to pay to get their daughters out. This raised the majority of the money apart from a collection that the girls made by going around their homes and collecting any loose change.
On the sock side we have collected approx 150 pairs of socks but we have had a little help from the congregation at St Mary's Church at Nether Alderley.

3rd Elworth Brownies

will be singing during the Rotary Club Swimathon - the water connection!
