On Tuesday 20, May 2007 7th Macclesfield St Paul’s Guides held a presentation evening to celebrate 3 girls gaining their Baden Powell Challenge awards. Helen Simmons, Lorna Day and Emily Holland are all 14 years old and have been members of St Paul’s Guides since they were 10. All three girls are now working towards their Young Leaders qualification at St Paul’s Guides. |
The presentation evening was also to recognise the bravery of 12 year old Kirstan Armitt.
|
Kirstan was presented with Girlguiding’s “Star of Merit award” by NW England’s region commissioner Wendy Graham. Kirstan suffered a stroke just over 12 months ago at the age of 11, whilst at primary school. Her Guiders were so impressed by her courage and determination to recover and carry on life as normal that they decided to nominate her for this rare accolade. |
There were over 70 people at the presentation evening which included parents of the awardees plus guiding commissioners from region, county, division and district. As well as family and friends Kirstan was also supported by her consultant and physio’s from the hospital and her year 6 primary teacher from Puss Bank.
The evening was summed up with the following words to describe Kirstan: ”Outstanding kindness, Self belief, Courage, modest and unassuming, a role model to us all – forever smiling – never gives up, treats everyone the same, plucky and out to have fun”
