Morocco … the sounds, the sights, the smell … what an amazing place!
We arrived for a very brief overnight stay in Marrakesh at 2.15am on Sunday 24th May. Excited but exhausted, we had a few hours’ sleep before breakfast and onwards to the Atlas Mountains and Kasbah du Toubkal. It’s hard to believe that the Atlas Mountains are just 60 miles from Marrakesh, it’s so flat and a complete contrast in its way of life.
Onwards & upwards we went into the Atlas Mountains, I’ve never seen anywhere quite so rocky! We arrived in the Imlil valley just before lunch. Our luggage was transported up to the Kasbah on the back of a mule as no cars can get up there! Kasbah du Toubkal is a fabulous Berber hospitality centre, situated in the High Atlas mountains, 60 miles from Marrakech. It is run in partnership with the local Berber community.

The views were absolutely incredible. Not a car in sight. The only sound is that of water rushing down the mountains. Amazing!
Part of the trip was to do a community action project in order for us to ‘Change the World’. We had several choices and most of us spent half a day or more on each. We spent time in the local community playing with the street children, we went litter picking and took activities to a boarding school in Asni (run by Education 4 All). It was a very humbling experience. They were all so proud of their culture and keen for us to be with them, it was wonderful!

Before we went back to Marrakesh I spent a night sleeping out under the African skies. The mountains were blacker than black, the sky black lit up by millions of bright stars in the sky. It was quite eerie seeing bats and moths flying overhead!
On our final day in the Imlil valley we had a ‘tented picnic’ together before going our separate ways on a walk back to the Kasbah, mule treks and a marathon 4 hour trek up the mountain (which Angela and I did)!

The remainder of the holiday was in Marrakech for sightseeing and shopping. If you have ever been, you will know it has a unique smell … a mixture of heat, horses and manure! The Souks were amazing …
Morocco was a wonderful experience, which I wouldn’t have missed for the world. I could definitely recommend it to anyone!
