Girlguiding guidance on Swine Flu

There is wealth of information regarding Swine flu on the internet, which is being updated daily by experts. Therefore the very best guidance that we can give our members in response to their questions is to direct them to these sources of information.

The first link is to the official Government website which is updated daily. You can find details of the National Swine flu helpline number, and by entering a postcode you can find details of your Local Public Health Authority. The second is the NHS website again updated daily and Leaders and Commissioners may find the questions and answer section helpful.

As the government guidance changes on a frequent basis, it is always best to refer to these websites for up-to-date information. At the moment, we are being told that the UK has moved from the 'containment' to the 'treatment' phase of swine flu as the number of people catching the virus continues to rise.

Best Practice

is recommended that Leaders and Commissioners who have to make decisions about whether to run or to admit people to an event or what to do if someone at an event has swine flu should first undertake their own risk assessment of the situation. Once this has been done, you should liaise with the Local Public Heath Authority for the area where the event is to be/has been held.

For specific news updates on latest recorded outbreaks region by region, take a look at the Health Protection Agency website. Their website also contains a useful tab with advice on exclusion from schools and workplaces.

AON Swine flu Response Resource

Girlguiding UK's insurance company, AON, have provided fact-based information on their website to help people make informed decisions. The Swine Flu Response Resource website has been created as an online resource for insights on the risks and concerns arising from a pandemic. The website also contains articles from AON experts on managing an infectious disease outbreak in the workplace and links to the latest news from WHO and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. There is also a form where you can submit queries and concerns. This website will be regularly updated as events dictate and new material becomes available. Members are recommended to contact AON if specific concerns arise.
