Girlguiding Centenary Lapland Winter Wonderland Adventure

In April 2010, Rebecca Dyson, a Young Leader from Poynton, was fortunate enough to experience the Girlguiding Centenary Lapland Winter Wonderland Adventure.

Here is a mini-diary of her week.

Friday: 15 girls from all over the UK, 2 leaders and 1 official teddy stayed overnight
on a church hall floor in Swindon.
Saturday am: Flew from Heathrow to Helsinki and caught a train bound for Lapland.

Saturday night: Still on the train.
Sunday am: Still on the train - it was a 13 hour journey!
Sunday pm: Arrived in Lapland and transferred by minibus to Harriniva. Kitted out with snow wear - very elegant!!
Monday am: Briefed on husky driving, met our huskies, including some pups. They are soooo... cute.
Set off on a husky safari to wilderness lodge in the middle of nowhere. Access was by sledge or ski-doo only

Monday pm: Ice fishing plus sauna followed by dip in an ice-hole. Great fun rolling
in the snow - in my bikini!!! Fed our dogs and bedded them down for
the night before crashing ourselves.
Tuesday: Transferred back to Harriniva by sledge - I loved driving the huskies.
Free time for chilling (literally) in the snow - it was up to my waist.
Wednesday am:

Visited a reindeer farm and rode on a "Santa Sledge".
Learnt about the history of the Lapp people and practised lassoing a
reindeer. They didn't cooperate so we had to pretend to be reindeer instead.

Wednesday pm: Treasure hunting for white bags hidden in the snow which contained
provisions which we needed later when practising survival skills.
Built our own kota (teepee) and played traditional Lappish games
including wellie throwing.
Thursday am: Walked to Sweden (well - it was only half a mile to the border)!
Thursday pm: Started the epic journey back to Helsinki.
Friday: Sight-seeing in Helsinki. Met up with Finnish Scouts and swapped
ideas for songs and games.
Saturday: 15 girls, 2 leaders and 1 official teddy fly back to London.
