Child Safety
Girlguiding UK has a deservedly excellent reputation for providing a safe environment for our members to enjoy all the activities they do, both indoors and outside.
All our adults leaders are volunteers and we have to follow clear safety guidelines as well as undertake a Leadership Qualification. Many of us do additional training in play and youth work.
All new leaders and any helpers over the age of 16 who may have unsupervised access to the girls and young women we work with, will agree to a check being carried out by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). All Leaders in Cheshire Border have now been through this process.
As well as undergoing this check, any volunteer is asked to complete a Warrent Reference (W/R) Form. This will involve:
- Nominating two referees who will be asked to confirm the person 's suitability to work with specific age groups.
- Disclosing any criminal convictions involving either children/young people or dishonesty and deception.
- Signing a declaration that they agree to abide by Girlguiding's Safe From Harm Policy.
Once the Government has completed legislation on introducing a Vetting and Barring list, Girlguiding UK will decide if a programme of rechecking should be introduced. (The Vetting and Barring list would contain a list of all individuals who are considered unsuitable to work with children and vulnerable adults.)
All the information regarding adults in guiding is held, in confidence, following the criteria in the Data Protection Act and the CRB Code of Practice.
New volunteers, male or female, do not have unsupervised access to girls and young women until all the necessary checks have taken place. Once the checks are completed, all volunteers are issued with appointment cards which they are happy to show you.
