Holmes Chapel District Event – Sangam’s Super Saturday
To mark World Thinking Day 2017, 97 Holmes Chapel District Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and members of the Senior Section came together on Saturday 4 March at Holmes Chapel Primary School. This was in celebration of the 50th birthday for Sangam, one of Girlguiding’s World Centres, in India.
The word “Sangam” means ‘coming together’ in the ancient language of Sanskrit and the girls explored how different methods of communication can help bring people together. They made a telephone using paper cups and string, before trying their hands at sending messages with semaphore flags.
In mixed unit groups, the girls had a great time learning Indian dancing before creating their own routines. There were food tasting activities as well as learning Hindi words for common foods. Many were keen to try an Indian themed craft and created Rangoli-inspired designs using coloured rice. Later, each girl made a clay oil lamp decorated with coloured beads.
From the youngest Rainbow, to the oldest girl in the Senior Section, they worked together using fabric, needles and thread to create a large wall hanging in the shape of Sangam’s mascot, Sangalee the elephant. The masterpiece is now on display for the village to enjoy in Holmes Chapel Library.
We waved goodbye to the Rainbows and Brownies, but for the Guides and Senior Section, the day didn’t end there! They went on to enjoy an Indian banquet, had gorgeous henna designs created on their feet and learnt how to perform a traditional Indian Head Massage.
Each girl also contributed an item greatly needed by Barnabus, the Christian Homeless Charity based in Manchester. Girlguiding is about making a positive difference to the local community as we believe that the girls can be a powerful force for good. The day really gave every girl the chance to live the Girlguiding ideals, have space to be themselves, develop a new skill and grow their self-confidence while discovering their potential.
Events like this couldn’t happen without the amazing team of Leaders and helpers in Holmes Chapel, so thank you to each and every one of you who made Sangam’s Super Saturday such a success.
